Throughout history, the spirit of ports around the world have been chronicled through vibrant work by local artists. Port Metro Vancouver has invited community artists to rekindle that tradition with outstanding results.

"Ladner Harbour Fishboats" by Glenn Morgan, South Delta BC"Ladner Harbour Fishboats" | Glenn Morgan | South Delta, BC

Glenn has lived in Ladner for the past 12 years. A member of the South Delta Artists Guild, he was mentored, coached and encouraged by some of their senior artists. Glenn has been painting for about 8 years and shares his knowledge by running art workshops at the Tsawassen Arts Council. A dynamic painter whose work harkens to the impressionist period, Glenn’s inspiration comes from the outdoors and, of course, the water.

 

"Anticipation" | Gary Fox | Ladner, BC

Gary moved from Richmond to Ladner 2 years ago where he finds a world of inspiration from local landscapes, animals, fishing boats and the harbour. An avid fisherman, his love of water is seen in much of his work. Serenity, calm, subtle shifting moods all combine to capture the colour and realism of scenes that catch his eye. A member of the South Delta Artists Guild, Gary has been painting for about 45 years for both the military and private sector.

Victoria has been a resident of Ladner since 1987. She began her career as a graphic artist then made the jump to full-fledged painter and illustrator nearly 20 years ago. She finds inspiration everywhere. At present, her focus is on old buildings with time-worn textures. She also recently created a series of paintings of fog across Ladner at night. Her work has won awards in juried shows across Canada, as well as internationally.

Marilyn has lived in Ladner most of her life. She left for 7 years to attend the Toronto School of Art. Having grown up a ½ block from the Fraser River, living by water has become a part of her life. From her studio on the dike, she finds inspiration from the view of wildlife, water, sky and mountains. Marilyn works in various mediums, exploring styles from abstract to representational. The common thread is the spirit taking form through the work.

Jill has lived in Tsawwassen for 18 years and just recently moved to Ladner a year ago. Born on the west coast, Jill pursued careers in fashion design and decorating before becoming a painter. Comfortable with both acrylic and oil, her love of strong colour is evident in her vibrant landscapes and oversized florals. Currently, she’s treasurer of the South Delta Artists Guild and a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Her dynamic, energetic collections can be seen brightening up galleries all across BC.

Linda and her relatives are long-standing members of Ladner. In fact, many commercial signs in the area were painted by her grandfather. Linda herself is a self-taught artist with over twenty five years experience. She finds inspiration in landscapes, animals, character buildings and from her special love of water. From soft realism to abstract expressionism, her work can be found in collections across Canada, the United States, Australia, Japan and England.

Pat was born in Ontario and now divides her time between Toronto and Vancouver, working out of her studio in Vancouver’s West End. Pat began taking local art classes on the West Coast and then moved into drawing and painting workshops.  She works mainly in watercolour, as she loves the way the pigments mix with water, but also enjoys using acrylic and pastel. Recently, her art has become more semi-abstract and she enjoys working and experimenting in this freer style. Pat’s paintings are in private collections in Canada, Europe and the U.S.

 

"Outward Bound" by Sunny Stringer, North Vancouver BC"Outward Bound" | Sunny Stringer | North Vancouver, BC

Sunny was born in Vancouver in 1920 and moved to the North Shore in 1955, when she and her husband built their family home in upper Lonsdale. Sunny started painting after retiring as an ESL teacher and studied under several local North Shore artists and teachers. Her work was inspired by her love of the outdoors and her extensive travel to most corners of the earth. Sunny was a member of the North Shore Artist's Guild and hoped to pass on her delight in nature and the outdoors to those who viewed her work. Sunny passed away in November 2009.

Larry and his family have lived in Vancouver ever since he was a young boy. He is a self taught artist who began to paint in 1987, after a successful career in music. Larry paints mainly in acrylics and is fond of Impressionism. He is especially fascinated how artists handle colour and understand light and translate it into art. He regularly enjoys doing plein air painting and does weekly life drawing. Larry is also a signature Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and his paintings have won many awards and can be found in coalitions throughout Canada and the U.S.
