Movement of Dangerous Goods
Leading up to and during the Games, there will be controls on the transportation of dangerous goods by water, road and rail, particularly adjacent to Olympic venues. These controls, implemented by the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit and Transport Canada, will have limited impacts on port operations overall during the Olympics and mostly will be limited to the Vancouver Downtown Core.
Impacts to Downtown Container Terminals
The Vancouver Downtown Core is delineated by Broadway to the south, Burrard Street to the west, Clark and Knight Streets to the east and Burrard Inlet to the north. While Centerm and Vanterm container terminals are included in this zone, a different set of restrictions applies to these two terminals.
Games Time Restrictions of Dangerous Goods
The following categories of dangerous goods will not be permitted at Centerm and Vanterm container terminals between January 26 and March 4, 2010:
- dangerous goods that require an Emergency Response Assistance Plan (ERAP) under Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations;
- Class 1 explosives in hazard divisions 1.1, 1.2 and 1.5; and
- Class 7 radioactive materials.
Exemptions
For business critical deliveries, the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit and Transport Canada may consider exemptions to the above restrictions. Shipping agents may contact Port Metro Vancouver for assistance with this process.

Dangerous Goods Permitting Process
Port Metro Vancouver’s permitting process for dangerous goods remains unchanged. However, the system will reject applications to transportation ERAP dangerous goods, IMO Class 1.1, 1.2 and 1.5 or IMO Class 7 via Centerm or Vanterm from January 26 to March 4, 2010, inclusive.
