Olympic Rings light up Vancouver Harbour

11/18/2009 12:01:00 PM

A local barge is carrying an unusual cargo for the next five months: a set of 14-metre high Olympic Rings in Vancouver harbour. The barge is part of a provincial initiative to celebrate the Vancouver 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games. With more than 56,000 LEDs, the Olympic rings will be a memorable sight for visitors and residents alike.

Positioning the 98 metre long barge in the harbour was a challenge requiring participation of the entire port community. Measuring 22 metres high, the barge and rings posed a risk to the busy float plane operations in Coal Harbour. Port Metro Vancouver worked with float plane operators, along with the Province, Seaspan, local police forces, the federal government and other port users and stakeholders to ensure a safe and secure location for the barge that minimizes impacts to port operations.

Four temporary piles were driven to secure the barge in its current location off Stanley Park, directly in front of the Main Media Centre, placing the Port at centre stage for the 2010 Winter Games.
