Port Metro Vancouver
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, doing business as Port Metro Vancouver, is a non-shareholder, financially self-sufficient corporation, established by the Government of Canada in January 2008, pursuant to the Canada Marine Act, and accountable to the federal Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities.
We are governed by a diverse board of directors representing government and industry, able to make independent and timely decisions on business plans and capital spending, clearly focused on the operational needs of port users and guided by a vision for long-term growth and competitiveness.
Amalgamation
In June 2006, the Federal Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities invited the Fraser River Port Authority, the North Fraser Port Authority and the Vancouver Port Authority to examine port amalgamation. The three port authorities subsequently commissioned a report on the potential benefits of an integrated port authority for the Lower Mainland. The report recommended that the three port authorities integrate to form the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.
On June 16, Transport Canada issued the “Certificate of Intent to Amalgamate Port Authorities.” On December 21, 2007, the federal government Gazetted the “Certificate of Amalgamation” that combines the Fraser River Port Authority, the North Fraser Port Authority, and the Vancouver Port Authority. The effective date of amalgamation of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority was January 1, 2008.
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority markets itself as Port Metro Vancouver. The company's legal name remains Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. We are responsible for the operation and development of the assets and jurisdictions of the combined Fraser River Port Authority, North Fraser Port Authority and Vancouver Port Authority.
