Recreational Waterfront Facilities

Port Metro Vancouver manages a jurisdiction that includes not only primary industrial port waterfront, but also conservation areas and recreational waterfront. Recreational waterfront access is a valued asset to a community, offering broad opportunities for oceanfront views, beach and water activities and recreational boating, among others. With diverse recreational waterfront use potential, differences sometimes arise between competing groups interested in beach and water access.

The Port recognizes that there is growing municipal and public sensitivity to applications for new residential dock facilities along waterfront areas. Concerns include the proliferation of single ownership docks, trends toward larger vessels and corresponding float facilities, impeded public access along the waterfront, environmental impacts and insufficient maintenance of existing docks.

As part of the continuous effort to balance the interests for beach and water access of the Port, residential waterfront property owners, the community, First Nations, and municipalities, Port Metro Vancouver is developing a Recreational Waterfront Management Plan for Burrard Inlet east of Second Narrows and Indian Arm and Port Moody Arm.
