Fraser River Sand
To ensure safe navigation, Port Metro Vancouver removes roughly two and a half million cubic metres of sand from the Fraser River deep-sea shipping channel each year – enough to fill Vancouver’s GM Place Stadium. On average, about half this volume is pumped upland and sold. Sand sales help Port Metro Vancouver offset a small portion of the multi-million dollar cost of dredging and protects jobs in the region by ensuring shipping will continue.
River sand has been used in large quantities for fill and preload at marine shipping terminals and warehouses, bridges and roads, rail yard and rail lines, the Vancouver International Airport, maintenance yards, and recreational facilities.
